Course Information

Introduction

This five-day course teaches practical SketchUp skills used on real projects. You will work through modelling, organization, and output workflows applied in architecture, interiors, landscape, and product design. Sessions focus on hands-on exercises: taking 2D plans into accurate 3D models, preparing presentation views, and producing basic construction drawings. The pace suits beginners and those looking to formalize practical SketchUp habits.

Objectives

1. Create accurate 3D models from 2D plans using SketchUp drawing and modification tools.
2. Structure models with groups, components, tags, and the Outliner for predictable edits and collaboration.
3. Apply materials, styles, and scenes to produce presentation-ready views and quick visual variants.
4. Use Layout to generate scaled 2D documentation and export PDFs for client and contractor review.
5. Export and prepare models for common downstream uses (DWG, STL, image exports) and for basic rendering pipelines.

- All training sessions are conducted from Monday to Friday, following the standard working week observed in the United Kingdom and European Union. Saturday and Sunday are official weekends and are not counted as part of the course duration.

- Using inference locking for precision
- Applying dimensions and measurement tools

Day 2 – Creating and Organising Models

1. Building 3D Models
- Converting 2D plans into 3D geometry
- Modelling walls, floors, roofs, and openings
- Editing complex geometry accurately

2. Groups and Components
- Creating reusable components
- Managing groups effectively
- Preventing geometry conflicts

3. Model Organisation
- Using Tags for visibility control
- Managing models with the Outliner
- Applying naming conventions for collaboration

Day 3 – Materials, Styles, and Presentation

1. Applying Materials
- Assigning colours and textures
- Editing material properties
- Creating realistic surface finishes

2. Styles and Visual Appearance

3. Scenes and Camera Views
